Will Ferrell Brings Exotic Animals To Stephen Colbert’s Post-Super Bowl ‘Late Show’
Will Ferrell visited Stephen Colbert’s live Late Show after Super Bowl 50 dressed in khaki-green knee socks, shorts, and vest, also sporting a leather hat, and a rifle. No, he did not watch the game, because “there was a three-hour Downton Abbey.”
“I’m curious about the outfit,” Colbert said, settling in to his role as Ferrell’s straight man.
“I just noticed your Late Show is kind of new and you don’t really have an animal expert yet. I thought I could step in and fill the gap,” Ferrell explained.
“I thought you were going to talk about Zoolander 2,” Colbert wondered.
“I’m not really focused on that now,” Ferrell said – a first on Colbert’s CBS show. “It’s all about the animals,” he said, explaining he’d brought “some of the rarest and most endangered animals in the world” to the show.
An assistant brought out a kitten who Ferrell insisted is a short-spined Peruvian mongoose – a particularly aggressive animal, prone to charge.
“That really looks like a kitty cat,” Colbert deadpanned.
“Stephen, who’s wearing the vest?” Ferrell scolded.
There is only one mongoose in Peru, Ferrell admitted when challenged further by Colbert, “because they’re so damned delicious.”
“So, was it fun working on the movie?” Colbert said, taking a stab at getting the interview back to plugging a movie.
“Which movie?” Ferrell shot back.
Next, the animal-wrangling assistant brought out a guinea pig. “This is Kayak, a Mongolian bush tiger,” Ferrell said. “He is going to grow to 11 feet long and weigh over 600 pounds. He can take down a full-grown moose.”
“Why do you have a gun?” Colbert asked, changing the subject, but finally asking the obvious question.
“If this bush tiger escapes, I’ve got to take it down. It’s the last one in existence, so it’s got nothing to lose,” Ferrell said, warning Colbert the guinea pig “is ready to rip your face off.”
And so the interview wore on. Finally, Ferrell’s assistant brought out a chicken.
“What’s that?” Colbert asked, like a good sport.
“Haven’t you ever seen a chicken?” Ferrell shot back.
Ferrell joined Whiskey Tango Foxtrot stars Tina Fey and Margot Robbie, Colbert’s former Comedy Central colleagues Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, who are starring together in Keanu, and Megyn Kelly, as Colbert made TV history in becoming the first late-night series to snag a live broadcast in the post-Super Bowl time slot.
