Far out: The Duggars go to the Far East

The Duggars have traveled from Arkansas to Asia: A three-part special on TLC follows the reality family of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar and their 19 kids and grandkids as they navigate Tokyo, Kyoto, and Beijing.

The below teaser of the special, "19 Kids and Counting: Duggars Do Asia," which follows the family on its trip to the Far East, shows Jim Bob asking, again and again, "Do you speak English?" Says Michelle Duggar, "We couldn't communicate at all." Not that anything like a language barrier would stop this family from jumping in.

Eyeing an entire fish brought out with a flourish on a platter at a restaurant, one of the Duggar children says suspiciously, "It looked like it might still be alive."

On its blog, the conservative Christian family recounts how everyone tried a traditional Japanese breakfast of seaweed and seafood, took a rickshaw ride, and learned how to make -- and eat -- a sushi hand roll. In China, the family visited the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square, attempted to figure out the crowded Chinese subway system, sampled Peking duck and something a little more exotic: live scorpion.

The Duggars seem game for anything. The boys tried out Samurai swordplay, and the girls dressed up like geishas. Just your typical trip for a family of 25 carting 40 suitcases.

This is not the first time TLC has transported one of its reality-show families to foreign lands. The network took Kate Gosselin and her brood of eight to Australia, back when the show "Kate Plus Eight" was a hit. Clearly, with the Duggars easily the size of a tour group, the network has upped its ambition. That is, after all, a lot of fish out of water.

On a more serious note, the family ends its tour at an orphanage in China, which promises to be memorable.
