‘Fantastic Beasts’ First Monday Beats ‘Doctor Strange’, & ‘Harry Potter’ 1 & 2

Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them took in $6.76M yesterday at 4,144 theaters in its fourth day of release, teeing off what is expected to be a fantastic week at the box office.

Among first Mondays for a film in November, Fantastic Beasts’ bests that of 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ($6.6M), Doctor Strange ($6.2M), 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets ($5.3M), and last year’s Spectre ($5.3M), sending its four-day cume to $81.2M. Yesterday, Fantastic Beasts benefited from 32% K-12 schools off, and 13% colleges being on break according to ComScore. Those numbers will hold today before increasing to 74% K-12 and 56% colleges out on Wednesday. On Thankgiving and Black Friday 100% will obviously be off for the holiday.

Tonight starting at 7PM, a whole new round of movies open for the Thanksgiving stretch led by Walt Disney’s animated movie Moana in 3,800 locations. That movie is expected to rake in $75M-$80M from Wednesday to Sunday, with most tracking sources giving Disney the edge over Fantastic Beasts, but there’s a forecast that potentially both films could bump up against each other in the long run with $75M a piece. Moana is looking similar to Disney’s 2010 Thanksgiving opener Tangled in its pre-release tracking I’m told, which drew 61% females, 57% under 25. There’s a possibility that Fantastic Beasts will continue to take the top portion of that having lured 55% females, 62% over 25.

Also opening tonight: Paramount’s Allied, Broad Green/Miramax’s Bad Santa 2, and Regency/20th Century Fox’s Rules Don’t Apply.
