This December, audiences will get a chance to broaden their Harry Potter horizons, courtesy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — a prequel spin-off from author J.K. Rowling set in a different corner of the Hogwarts crew’s universe. Warner Bros. has already greenlit a Fantastic Beasts sequel for 2018, likely in no small part to the enthusiastic reception that greeted its first Comic-Con trailer in July. And with the release of its brand-new U.S. theatrical trailer (watch it above), expect the buzz only to grow for the holiday blockbuster-in-waiting.

Premiering on The Ellen DeGeneres Show‘s EllenTube this morning, the Fantastic Beasts trailer thrillingly lays out its premise concerning Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), a British wizard with a suitcase full of monsters in 1920s America. When those creatures are accidentally set loose, it sparks Scamander’s quest to locate his wayward beasts — a task he undertakes with the support of a witch (Katherine Waterson) and a human friend (Dan Fogler), and that’s complicated by Colin Farrell’s anti-Non-Maj (i.e., muggle) militant — and a conflict between the U.S. and U.K. wizarding worlds.

Also featuring Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jon Voight, Alison Sudol, Ron Perlman, and Zoë Kravitz, and directed by Harry Potter veteran David Yates, Fantastic Beasts appears to be brimming with the sort of larger-than-life fantasy — full of awe-inspiring magic and monsters, as well as some humor and romance to keep things lively — that fans expect from Rowling. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them surfaces in theaters on Nov. 18.
