Exclusive 'I Am Chris Farley' Clip Shows Never-Before-Seen Second City Footage

Chris Farley knew how to steal the limelight, often outshining his very capable cast mates on Saturday Night Live and in big-screen comedies like Black Sheep and Tommy Boy (and no, David Spade didn’t seem to mind it one bit).

The late funnyman, who died of a drug overdose in 1997, is remembered fondly by friends and family in the above exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary I Am Chris Farley. Dan Aykroyd says Farley lit up a room. His brother, Kevin Farley, proclaims Chris larger than life, even as a kid. And Bob Odenkirk — who performed with Chris on Chicago’s Second City stage in the ‘80s, and wrote on SNL during Farley’s small-screen reign in the '90s — says his energy always surpassed other performers.

Early footage of Farley doing a skit at Second City also appears in the new clip. The never-before-released footage shows Farley doing his famous physical comedy. The doc’s director, Brent Hodge, told Yahoo Movies via email that the video was shot sometime between 1987 and 1989, and you can spot Farley’s future SNL cast mate Tim Meadows punching the wildly flailing Farley through a stage door. “It’s pretty great,” says Hodge. “You can’t find this stuff online.”

I Am Chris Farley, also features interviews with Spade, Adam Sandler, Christina Applegate, Mike Myers, Molly Shannon, and many more. The documentary opens theatrically in select cities this Friday, before premiering Aug. 10 on Spike TV and then available on iTunes, VOD, and DVD on Aug. 11.
