Exclusive Clip: 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Modeled After Classic Westerns

Most big-budget action movies require the efforts of an army of effects specialists (as anyone who’s sat through the end-credits can tell you) — and that’s especially true on a Michael Bay movie. And even more true for the digital-effects department on a Michael Bay movie. Hundreds of people are credited for the elaborate computer artistry in Transformers: Age of Extinction. In this behind-the-scenes video, seen here first on Yahoo Movies, we get to see how dominating Dinobots were made to come alive on the big screen.

(Featured in the clip are, in order of appearance, screenwriter Ehren Kruger, visual-effects supervisor Scott Farrar, digital artist supervisor Michael Balog, and digital compositing supervisor Jeff Sutherland.)

"It’s like classic Western shots," says Farrar of a sequence wherein Optimus Prime rides a galloping Grimlock, "only it’s a robot on a dinosaur."

Unfinished work is on display here, offering a hint of the immense number of man- (and woman-) hours that went into making the monstrous summer blockbuster.
