The Face of Evil! 3 Key Moments From the 'SPECTRE' Trailer

From the very beginning of SPECTRE’s production, 007 fans have been primed for a retro spy movie that pays tribute to the classic Bond films of the ‘60s, while staying true to the grittier Daniel Craig years. So it was a real thrill to hear a familiar snippet of musical score three quarters of the way through SPECTRE’s wild new full-length trailer. (Catch it at around the 1:45 mark.) That would be the propulsive theme from 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the underrated, black-sheep Bond movie starring one-off 007 George Lazenby. If this is how SPECTRE director Sam Mendes is going to pay homage, we approve. Among the other big takeaways for the movie hitting theaters on Nov. 7:

Oberhauser reveal!
We finally get a clear look at Christoph Waltz’s villainous mastermind Franz Oberhauser. (In the first teaser, he remained appropriately in the shadows.) His personal connection to Bond has been hinted at, but just in case you missed those clues, here he says, “It was me James — the author of all your pain.” Likewise, the bad-to-the-bone contours of the conspiracy-minded SPECTRE organization are further filled in: Is SPECTRE the source of all evil in the extended Bond universe? Also side note: We totally believe Waltz when he insists he’s not playing a version of the ür-Bond baddie Blofeld. But then they go and put him in a Nehru-style jacket?

007 gone rogue
The trailer opens where all great Bond movies start: With 007 breaking pretty much every rule in the MI5 playbook. The new M (Ralph Feinnes) has Bond in his office for a scolding: “You had no authority. None.” Our special agent, of course, doesn’t seem to much care as he enlists Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) in his plan. “What’s going on James? They say you’re finished. I think you’re just getting started,” asks a knowing Moneypenny. For the gadget heads, we also get a loving reveal of Bond’s new ride.

The women of Bond
While we get some glimpses of Monica Bellucci as “the widow of an infamous criminal,” it’s Léa Seydoux’s Madeleine Swann who figures most prominently in the trailer. The daughter of Bond antagonist Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), she obviously has something that both sides want: In an explosive Alpine chase scene, she’s driven away in a car with hulking henchman Mr. Hinx (Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista) while Bond basically destroys an airplane pursuing them.
