'Everest' Trailer Aims for High Drama, Icy Thrills

Considering that climbing Mount Everest remains the quintessential man vs. nature challenge, it’s amazing the Himalayan peak has never been the subject of a major motion picture. That changes with Everest, this fall’s big-budget action-drama from Contraband and 2 Guns director Baltasar Kormákur. The first trailer, above, debuted today.

Based on true events of 1996, the film follows New Zealander mountaineer Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) as he leads a team of daredevils from various walks of life (including Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, and Jake Gyllenhaal) up Earth’s highest mountain. Disaster strikes when the team encounters one fierce mother of a blizzard near the peak.

Everest takes its cues from the best-selling non-fiction account Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer, who had previous page-to-screen success with 2007’s Into the Wild.

We’d suggest not reading too much about the real-life incident if you want to be surprised by the movie. Though, judging strictly from the amount of screen time he gets in this preview, it might not look so good for Jake Gyllenhaal.

Everest opens Sept. 18.
