'Ant-Man' Star Evangeline Lilly's New Hairdo Looks Awfully Wasp-y

Forget those splashy form-fitting costumes: apparently, it’s the haircut that makes the superhero. Evangeline Lilly, one of the stars currently shooting the big-screen version of Ant-Man, recently shared the results of her pre-shoot trip to the salon on Instagram. Her new short, pointy bob instantly had everyone crying “Wasp!” — and not because there was a stinging bug flying around above her head.  Instead, the actress now looks like a dead ringer for Janet  Van Dyne, partner (professional and personal) of Hank Pym a.k.a Ant Man. And who, per Marvel Comics history, battled evildoers in the pint-sized form of The Wasp, alongside fully-grown founding Avengers like Thor and Iron Man.

There’s just one problem: Lilly isn’t playing Janet in the Peyton Reed-directed movie. Instead, she’s been cast as Hope Van Dyne, the offspring of an older Hank (Michael Douglas) and an apparently missing (or dead) Janet.  And while Hope will presumably be helping her old man and the guy he’s picked to inherit the Ant Man mantle, Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd, who appeared with his on-screen love interest in another Instagram shot) in some way, there’s been no indication (before now, anyway) that she’ll be doing it in Wasp form.  Furthermore, folks with some knowledge of previous drafts of the script claim that even if Hope does follow in her mother’s footsteps, it won’t happen this time around, anyway.

The absence of Janet (and her Wasp alter ego) from the movie sparked some anger earlier this year, from fans dissatisfied with the paltry number of female heroes currently residing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Marvel is looking to turn around the perception that Ant Man is a troubled project following the departure of original director, Edgar Wright, it’s possible that Lilly’s haircut—and its possible implications—are an olive branch teasing the introduction of a new crime-fighting pal for Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and/or Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, if the latter ever finds her way to Earth. All we know, is that everyone had better keep a sharp eye on rumored Doctor Strange candidates Joaquin Phoenix and Benedict Cumberbatch the next time either one of them is spotted walking out of a barbershop.
