Is 'Entourage' Secretly a Time-Travel Movie?

Is the Entourage movie actually a subtle sci-fi flick?

On the surface, of course, the HBO sitcom revival is a nostalgia-fueled blast from the past: The film, written and directed by show creator Doug Ellin, picks up almost immediately where the series ended in 2011, catching up with Vinnie Chase and the boys only eight days after that final episode.

The film’s casual misogyny and retrograde attitudes certainly reflect an unfortunate past, but Entourage isn’t exactly a rigorous period piece that’s faithful to the time in which it is set. In striving to stuff relevant celebrity cameos and plot points into his story, Ellin made a movie that is either laughably unconcerned with the metaphysical feasibility of much of its script, or is aided by a flux capacitor secretly stuffed inside Ari Gold’s luxurious Cadillac.

Let’s lay out the timeline of the film: The series finale, which aired on Sept. 11, 2011, takes place some time in the spring of that year (which we know because Ari’s daughter is said to soon be graduating high school). After about 20 minutes, the Entourage film zips ahead eight months, which puts us around December of 2011 for most of the action.

Many of the things that happen in the movie just couldn’t have taken place at that moment. There are spoilers below, obviously.

Russell Wilson, the star quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, hangs out at a big rough-cut screening party for Vince’s directorial debut, Hyde, soon after the film picks up eight months later. There, he talks to Eric (Kevin Connolly) about how he did not let his height — Wilson is 5 foot, 11 inches — stop him from becoming a Super Bowl champion. It’s a nice story, but Wilson wasn’t drafted by the Seahawks until April 2012… and didn’t win the Super Bowl until February 2014.

Also at that late 2011 party is Emily Ratajkowski, the model and actress who became famous after appearing in the music video for Robin Thicke and Pharrell’s song “Blurred Lines”… in March of 2013. It would be possible that she’d be at a Hollywood party a few years earlier — she was a rising model before the video — but at one point during the party, Travis McCredle (the spoiled Texan heir played by Haley Joel Osment) tells Rajatkowski that he loved her Sports Illustrated photo shoot… which was released in 2014.

Pharrell himself is actually at that party, which is totally believable — except that he’s wearing his goofy tall hat, which became his trademark after he first wore it at the 2014 Grammys. Maybe he was wearing it in private for a few years, but we doubt it.

The other impossible celebrity cameo involves Mark Wahlberg, who executive produced the film and helped create the series by providing the source material (it was based loosely on his early Hollywood adventures). Wahlberg runs into Vinnie at the Warner Bros. editing facility, where he mentions that he’s working on Ted 3. The first Ted didn’t hit theaters until the summer of 2012, and they certainly didn’t green-light a sequel seven months before its release, let alone a second sequel.

Wahlberg also plugs his family’s A&E reality show Wahlburgers, which didn’t begin airing until 2014.

One plot point that was blurry, time-wise, was Lloyd (Rex Lee) getting married. He tells Ari that he’s engaged to be married in December 2011, a year and a half before same-sex marriages were legalized by the California State Supreme Court in June 2013.

The wedding takes place at the end of the movie, following an event that takes place (presumably) in January of 2013. Either Lloyd decided to have a ceremony despite the hold on same-sex unions, or they waited an extra six months and celebrated the court’s decision with nuptials in Ari’s backyard.

Also questionable: The various digital devices and cars that appear in the film seem to be models that weren’t available in 2011, but that’s hard to verify. And anyway, if our thesis is correct, maybe Russell Wilson and Emily Ratajkowski brought the newer iPads as gifts from the future.
