Emma Watson, Tom Hanks, John Boyega in First Trailer for 'The Circle': Progress vs. Privacy?

In the first trailer for The Circle (watch it above), Tom Hanks plays a Steve Jobs-like mogul running a technology company where Emma Watson’s newbie comes to work — and which she soon discovers is (gasp!) up to no good. Based on the novel by Dave Eggers, it’s a techno-phobic tale eager to be labeled “timely,” and as its new trailer reveals, it’ll deliver its warning about the perils of the online world in a distinctly Black Mirror-ish way.

In the clip, a bearded Hanks steps on stage at a conference populated by mantra-chanting acolytes to deliver a speech about the great benefits that come from maximum connectivity and surveillance — goals that will be achieved via the efforts of his Apple-by-way-of-Google company, The Circle. But in the crowd, the new hire played by Watson doesn’t find such remarks altogether comforting. Despite images of her being enticed by The Circle’s digital wonders and campus camaraderie, it soon becomes clear (especially after an encounter with a co-worker played by John Boyega) that the always-plugged-in paradigm promised by this conglomerate isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Considering such paranoia’s been-here, done-that nature, as well as the fact that Eggers’ novel wasn’t exactly rapturously received by critics when it was published in 2013, The Circle – directed by The End of the Tour’s James Ponsoldt, and co-starring Karen Gillan, Patton Oswalt, Bill Paxton, and Ellar Coltrane — will have to prove to viewers that it has something new to say about our techno-saturated present (and future) when it debuts in theaters on April 28, 2017.
