'Elstree 1976' Trailer: Meet 10 Who Were There When 'Star Wars' Was Born

A long time ago in a cinematic galaxy far, far away from the hoopla that surrounds all things Star Wars today, the film that would eventually be known as A New Hope was born at Elstree Studios in London. Now, a documentary produced in part via Kickstarter gives a sense of how it felt to be there.

Elstree 1976 (in select theaters and on video-on-demand May 6) profiles ten supporting actors and extras who populated George Lucas’ original trilogy. Director Jon Spira focuses on what it’s been like for these individuals who, decades ago, agreed to do some bit work on the production just outside London – and then watched that project blow up into a global sensation beyond anyone’s expectations. We’ll meet Paul Blake, a.k.a., Greedo, the bounty hunter who shot first before being blasted by Han Solo at the Mos Eisley cantina; Jeremy Bulloch, who would eventually don the weathered helmet and armor of Boba Fett; and David Prowse, the weightlifter tasked with embodying cinema’s most famous villain: Darth Vader.

Spira’s film not only looks at these actors’ experiences on-set, but also before and after their fleeting time working on Star Wars – including Prowse’s contentious falling out with Lucas.
