EFM Roundup: K5 Lands Rights To Tim Robbins’ ‘Man Under’, Political Thriller ‘The Lion’s Share’; WestEnd Secures Atom Bomb Drama ‘Midnight Sun’

K5 International has acquired international rights to Man Under, which will be directed by and star Tim Robbins. Michelle Pfeiffer and Chloe Moretz co-star in the pic, about a Yonkers family swept up in New York’s art and high society scene after their picture is taken by a photographer whose tragic death raises her profile and that of her subjects. Ann Cherkis (The Secret) wrote the screenplay, and Alexandra Milchan through her EMJAG Prods, Scott Lambert of Film 360, and Aimée Peyronnet of Wild Child Films are producing. K5 is introducing Man Under to EFM buyers at the Berlin Film Festival; UTA Independent Film Group is repping North American rights. Robbins is represented by UTA and 3 Arts, Pfeiffer by CAA and Management 360, and Moretz by WME and 3 Arts.

K5 also has taken worldwide rights to the political thriller The Lion’s Share, to be directed by Nathan Morlando and star Jim Sturgess and Djimon Hounsou. It begins shooting in September and is the story of journalist Aaron Fletcher (Sturgess), who travels to Somalia to secure a career-making interview with highly dangerous pirate Samakab “Kab” Roble (Hounsou). The danger escalates for both men and the interview takes on new stakes as the journalist learns the only way out may be to deliver the head of a man who is both hero and criminal. WestEnd Films has acquired international sales rights to the political drama Midnight Sun, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Diane Kruger and Emile Hirsch. Chris Eigeman wrote the script and is directing the 1943-set pic about Columbia post grads Max and Jack, who are recruited by the U.S. government to work on a top-secret project in New Mexico. They arrive from New York and find themselves in a deeply alien land, where friendships are betrayed and Max’s young marriage is threatened as they build the most powerful weapon the world has ever known. Principal photography stars in the summer. Captivate Entertainment’s Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner and Eric Morris are producing. Andrew Herwitz and Julianne Hausler executive produce. Richard Rhodes, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for The Making Of The Atomic Bomb, is an adviser. U.S. sales are being handled here by The Film Sales Company. …

108 Media has taken on international sales for the autobiographical comedy Fugly!, written and directed by John Leguizamo. Similar to the deal the company recently made with Paddy Considine-starrer, Honour, 108 and distribution partner Paladin will release the movie in North America later this year. Fugly! is a fictionalized rendering of Leguizamo’s one-man show, Ghetto Klown, and also stars Rosie Perez, Radha Mitchell, Griffin Dunne, Yul Vasquez, Tomas Milian and Ally Sheedy. Shooting has begun on The Alan Partridge Movie, the big-screen transfer of the Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci-created character that Studiocanal is selling here. Colm Meaney, Anna Maxwell Martin, Monica Dolan, Sean Pertwee and Dustin Demri-Burns have joined the cast that already included Coogan, Felicity Montagu, Tim Key, Simon Greenall, Phil Cornwell, Nigel Lindsay and Darren Boyd. The movie is a Baby Cow Films production for BBC Films, BFI Film Fund and Studiocanal. Declan Lowney directs and Kevin Loader and Henry Normal produce. Stealth Media Group has boarded the $40M action thriller The Enforcer, an Ireland-France-Spain co-production set to shoot later this year, as well as Narrator Entertainment’s documentary The Elephant Warrior, about the illegal African ivory trade. Enforcer is from a script by Stephen McDool (Ironclad, The Killing House) and centers on a former IRA enforcer who is drawn back into his violent mob past while searching for his missing brother. Elephant Warriorfollows activist Max Graham’s hunt to save elephants and is set to be delivered in January 2014. The film is being produced by Heidi Jo Markel of Eclectic Pictures (Lovelace, Playing For Keeps, Solitary Man) and Benjamin Scott, also of Eclectic Pictures (Lovelace, Paranormal).
