Eddie Redmayne Recalls His Awful Audition for ‘The Hobbit’
Eddie Redmayne may be on his way to a Best Actor Oscar nomination, but just a few years ago, he was just a young Brit taking extreme measures during auditions.
Take, for example, his botched tryout for The Hobbit, which the Theory of Everything star recalled during a recent interview with the U.K.’s top chat show host, Graham Norton.
Though he contorted his body in extreme ways to play Stephen Hawking, it wasn’t such a good strategy when he tried out to play Bilbo Baggins. Inspired by Ian Holm, who played the older Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings, Redmayne twisted his limbs and talked in an almost sing-song manner during his taped audition, which he now remembers with great embarrassment.
On the bright side, the story of his failure quite amused Anna Kendrick.
