'Dumb and Dumber To' Directors Reveal Harry Dunne's 20-Year Backstory

We know exactly what Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) was up to in the 20 years since 1994’s Dumb and Dumber. The sequel Dumb and Dumber To, which opened no. 1 at the box office this past weekend, reveals that Lloyd pretended to be comatose at a mental institution with the sole purpose of pulling off an epic “Gotcha!” on his best friend and fellow dimwit Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels).

Harry visits Lloyd every week, bringing him candy (that mysteriously gets eaten) and even changing his dirty diapers. We also know Harry had to take on a new meth-cooking roommate to cover rent, setting the stage for a fantastic celebrity cameo. But how exactly has Harry passed all that time without his partner in crime?

It turns out writer-directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary, Kingpin) wrote and even filmed an entire backstory for Harry, but the scenes didn’t make the final cut. The brothers tell Yahoo Movies that Harry fell in love with a little person, discovered New Age philosophy, wrote a book called Eat Sleep Poop, and was actually entangled in that whole Branch Davidian cult standoff in Waco, Texas (which, now that we fact-check, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense given the first movie came out in 1994 and the siege happened in 1993. Does this mean the first Dumb and Dumber was a period piece?).

Either way, watch the brothers explain the backstory in the video above and look for the deleted scenes when Dumb and Dumber To hits DVD and Blu-ray.
