Denzel Washington Gets Rough With Some Russians in the Trailer for ‘The Equalizer’

When Denzel Washington’s glowering face hits the screen these days, there’s a good chance that fists — not to mention knives, bullets, and the occasional coolly delivered one-liner — are about to go flying.

Such is the case with the just-released trailer for The Equalizer, Washington’s follow-up to last year’s shoot-'em-up hit 2 Guns, and his second film with director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day). It opens with a shot of a forlorn 24/7 diner shining out like a Edward Hopperesque sanctuary on a dark, deserted city street; Washington sits inside, trying to mind his own business while reading a musty old hardcover book. But his literary studies are soon interrupted by Chloë Grace Moretz , wearing a black bob wig and a mini-dress, looking so wrong she all but screams damsel-soon-to-be-in-distress at the top of her lungs. And then, right on cue, in walks the Russian mafia.

In the hours to come, the remainder of the trailer promises, a lot of bad guys are going to get set straight, a lot of glass is going to get broken. Denzel, meanwhile, punches his way through it all without breaking a sweat, or even having to walk fast. And who knows? By the end, maybe he’ll even get a chance to finish that book.

The Equalizer opens Sept. 26.
