Dazzling 'Pan' Trailer Gives Us First Look at Peter's Origin Story

For a tale as time-honored as Peter Pan, you’d better bring something new and exciting to the table when rehashing it yet again for the big screen. And based on the first trailer for next year’s Pan — which you can watch above — it looks like filmmaker Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride & Prejudice) has found the perfect hook for audiences old and new.

Up until now, the only glimpses we’ve gotten of Wright’s origin have been via Hugh Jackman’s various facial-hair selfies. But the new trailer not only teases the “untold story” of how a young Peter ended up in Neverland, it also looks like a dazzling slice of vintage swashbuckling adventure.

In this latest take on the J.M. Barrie classic, newcomer Levi Miller plays our orphaned hero, and the trailer’s early scenes portraying his hard-knock life give off a distinctively Hugo-esque vibe. They’re in stark contrast to the colorful, stranger-tides fantasy world that follows, where Peter is taken after he’s kidnapped by pirates, and where he’ll discover it’s his destiny to save this land of Lost Boys, fairies and mermaids from the evil Blackbeard, played by an engagingly hammy Jackman.

Wright, no stranger to impressive ensembles, has assembled a stellar supporting group for Pan, including Garrett Hedlund (On the Road) as the wise-cracking James Hook; Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) as the Native American princess Tiger Lily; and Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) as Peter’s mama, Mary.

Suddenly we’re a lot more excited for July 17, when Pan will fly into theaters nationwide.
