The future of Pandora won’t be a story told only on screen, with Dark Horse Comics announcing a new partnership with 20th Century Fox and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment for a line of Avatar comic books.

In a special video message played during the publisher’s Friday morning panel at New York Comic Con (see below), director Cameron promised a series of comics featuring “new storylines from the past, present and the future world of Avatar.”

The announcement continues a long relationship between the Oregon-based publisher and Cameron; previously, the company has published comics spinning out of his Aliens, Terminator and The Abyss features.

“James Cameron is one of the film industry’s greatest talents,” Dark Horse president Mike Richardson said in a statement. “His films, always on the cutting edge technologically, feature rich characters and amazing worlds, a fact reflected in Avatar’s status as the all time box-office champion. We couldn’t be more excited about working with James and his team at Lightstorm to expand the breathtaking world of Pandora.”

Cameron is currently working on three sequels to Avatar, with the first scheduled for release in 2017. No release date for Dark Horse’s Avatar titles have been announced by the publisher.

New York Comic Con continues at the Javits Center until Oct. 11.
