Danny DeVito Recalls Being Attacked by a Monkey on the 'Batman Returns' Set

During his recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show, DeVito (per Uproxx) shared a truly bonkers (and “horrifying”) story from his time spent on Batman Returns, Tim Burton’s blockbuster 1992 sequel to his 1989 hit, in which the actor co-starred (alongside Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer) as the Dark Knight’s squawking nemesis, the Penguin. As previously mentioned, it involves a primate attacking the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star — and targeting, in particular, his most private (and vulnerable!) of parts. It’s a decidedly unique moviemaking war story — and one that fellow guests Ewan McGregor and Sam Neill seem to find fascinating.

The fact that no stars from Batman v Superman or Justice League have yet recounted similar stories indicates that either the filmmaking process has become safer over the past few decades — or that Zack Snyder just doesn’t know how to create on-set animal chaos quite like Burton. Regardless, DeVito’s tale is legitimately harrowing (and amusing); hear him tell it in the clip above.
