Following last year's buzzy, star-studded Hunger Games soundtrack, Lionsgate and Republic Records have revealed the first artist to be featured on the Catching Fire album: Coldplay.
The multi-platinum, multi-Grammy winning band will release the first song off the official Catching Fire soundtrack, titled "Atlas," on Aug. 26. This marks the first time that Coldplay has ever recorded an original song for a motion picture.
"I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film," said director Francis Lawrence, who took the reins from Hunger Games helmer Gary Ross last year. "Their unwavering passion and excitement for the project elevated the collaboration even further, and we can't wait to share this music with audiences around the world."
Additional soundtrack contributors are expected to be announced in coming weeks. The official album for the franchise's first film, The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond, included tracks from Maroon 5, Miranda Lambert's Pistol Annies, Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Kid Cudi, Arcade Fire, Neko Case and more. The compilation hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making it the first soundtrack to top the chart since November of 2009.
Coldplay's last studio album, Mylo Xyloto, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in October of 2011.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is due to hit theaters on Nov. 22, 2013. A release date for the soundtrack has not yet been announced.
