CNN Wins White House Correspondents’ Dinner
CNN ranked No. 1 in the news demo among cable news networks in primetime last week, Monday through Sunday. That makes it three consecutive wins, which CNN has accomplished just three times in the past 15 years.
CNN’s coverage of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner – President Barack Obama’s last and likely Larry Wilmore’s too – ranked No. 1 in both overall audience and in the news demo through Saturday evening.
During the 10 PM hour, when Obama killed and Wilmore died, CNN clocked 3M viewers and 771K news demo viewers. In both metrics the CNN average was larger than that of combined Fox News (1.2M total viewers, 238K news demo viewers) and MSNBC (945K total viewers, 212K news demo viewers). That’s a total of about 5.2M viewers for the two performances on cable
news.
CSPAN, which covers every square inch of Nerd Prom, is not rated by Nielsen, being an advertising-free public service of the cable industry.
From 7-11:30 PM Saturday night, CNN clocked 1.9M viewers to Fox News Channel’s 1.2M and MSNBC’s 522K. Among those key 25-54 year olds, CNN clocked 458K viewers to Fox News’ 183K and MSNBC’s 134K.
FNC was the week’s No. 1 ranked cable network in total viewers for total day (1.2M) and No. 2 in primetime (2M) behind only TNT (2.6M).
Meanwhile, 640K viewers tuned in to Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show last night to see what Wilmore would have to say about his WHCD and the blowback. That’s Nightly’s biggest overall crowd since February 3. Of those 640K, 149 fell into the 18-34 age bracket, and 297K in the 18-49 demo, compared to 301K in the news demo, 25-54.
