Christian Bale’s ‘Knight of Cups’ Set for U.S. Premiere at Santa Barbara Festival

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has selected Christian Bale’s “Knight of Cups” as its Centerpeice Film with a screening on Feb. 7 at the Arlington Theatre.

The showing will be the U.S. premiere for the Terrence Malick drama and will take place 364 days after the world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Broad Green Pictures is releasing “Knight of Cups” in the U.S. on March 4.

The film also stars Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Freida Pinto, Isabel Lucas, Imogen Poots, Wes Bentley, Brian Dennehy and Teresa Palmer. Bale portrays a writer on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self.

Nicolas Gonda, Sarah Green and Ken Kao are producing. Malick’s last film, “To the Wonder,” starred Ben Affleck and Olga Kurylenko and grossed less than $3 million worldwide. His 2011 film, “The Tree of Life,” took in more than $50 million worldwide.

Variety‘s Justin Chang called the film “flawed but fascinating” in his review at Berlin.

The Santa Barbara festival had already announced that it would open Feb. 3 with the U.S. premiere of “The Little Prince,” directed by Mark Osborne and featuring the voices of Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, Ricky Gervais, James Franco, Mackenzie Foy and Benicio Del Toro.

Xavier Giannoli’s “Marguerite” will close out the festival on Feb. 13. The film, loosely inspired by the life of Florence Foster Jenkins, stars Catherine Frot.

The festival will include 52 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres along with tributes to Johnny Depp, Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Elizabeth Banks, Joel Edgerton, Paul Dano, Jacob Tremblay, Alicia Vikander, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Géza Röhrig, Brie Larson, Saoirse Ronan and Rooney Mara.
