How Chris Hemsworth Helped Tom Holland Land Spider-Man Role

Tom Holland had a friend in a high place when it came to auditioning for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, Asgard.

In 2013, Holland bonded with Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, as the pair endured the shared experience of suffering through 500-calorie-per-day diets to play shipwrecked whalers in Ron Howard’s 2015 historical drama In the Heart of the Sea. So the young British actor used his Aussie mate as a reference when he went out for the role of Spider-Man, who would cameo in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before getting his own standalone reboot with this summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming.

“I sent him an email while auditioning, sort of like, ‘Hey, Chris, so I’m auditioning for Spider-Man. Can you let them know that I’m amazing or something?'” Holland recalled to us in a Facebook Live interview. “And he replied like, ‘Hey, mate. Yeah I’ll let them know that you never learned your lines, you’re late all the time, and you’re terrible at your job.’ I was like, ‘Thanks, Chris.'”

Obviously, Hemsworth was taking the piss out of his young friend, and their brotherly rivalry has expanded to social media in the years since, where Holland once challenged Hemsworth to a stunt-off on Instagram.

But it’s all in good humor. As Holland noted genuinely, “Apparently he put in a lovely word” to Marvel. And while it’s unlikely the pair will share any screen time in their solo adventures this year (after Homecoming hits in July, Hemsworth has Thor: Ragnarok opening in November), at least we know the two buds will be reassembling for 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Spider-Man Homecoming opens July 7.
