Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, and Ryan Gosling — with those names getting top billing (in the exclusive poster above), you might think they’re the leads in a Legends of the Fall sequel. But no, the three heartthrob actors are seriously subverting their sex appeal in The Big Short, about a group of obscure finance guys who saw the credit and housing bubble collapse of the 2000s coming from miles away.

Also starring Steve Carell and an ensemble that includes Oscar winners Marisa Tomei and Melissa Leo, the film marks a departure for director Adam McKay, best known for slapstick comedies Anchorman and Step Brothers. But, as McKay told Yahoo Movies in September, he geeked out on the material, based on the best-selling nonfiction book by Michael Lewis, who also wrote the true tale that became Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side. “The night I read The Big Short I picked it up about 8 o'clock, 8:30 [p.m.] and stayed up all night reading it,” McKay told Yahoo. “My wife said, ‘What the hell? It’s 5:30 in the morning. Why are you still awake?’ I said, ‘I couldn’t put this book down.’”

When it came to adapting the page-turner, McKay knew he wouldn’t ditch his comedy roots completely. “It’s a funny movie,” he said. “It is drama, there’s funny stuff in it, and then there’s some genre bending we do.”

Premiering tonight at Hollywood’s AFI Fest, The Big Short enters theaters Dec. 23.
