Just over a month after their break-up made headlines, exes Charlize Theron and Sean Penn are back together to finish a movie. On Wednesday, the former couple was photographed in South Africa on the set of their drama The Last Face. While star Theron and director Penn appear tense in the pictures, that could just be the nature of the project: Theron plays a relief worker in Africa during a time of violent political conflict.

Theron and Penn, who were engaged and dated for a year and a half, began filming The Last Face — which co-stars Javier Bardem and Blue Is The Warmest Color’s Adèle Exarchopoulos— last year. Bardem plays a doctor who’s in love with Theron’s character. The project had actually been in development for years: At one point Penn’s ex-wife Robin Wright was reportedly attached to star with Ryan Gosling.

In a June interview with British Elle, published prior to the announcement of the split, Theron admitted that collaborating on a film with her then-boyfriend had its challenges. “Putting aside that he’s my partner, he’s the love of my life; for the first time, I felt that my work was really bleeding into my life, and that made it hard,” she said. “There were moments where I was incredibly unfair to him. And moments where I felt like … he was incredibly unfair to me. But it makes you realize that no matter how complicated it gets, the priority is the relationship.”

The couple’s break-up was first reported by Us Weekly on June 17. According to that publication, Theron ended things with Penn by cutting him off completely without an explanation, a practice known as “ghosting” that immediately became a media obsession.
