‘Captain America: Civil War’ Crossing $1B Global Box Office Today; #1 Movie Of 2016
On Wednesday, Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War passed Zootopia to become the top-grossing movie of 2016 at $982M. With Thursday now factored in, Team Cap and Team Iron Man are at $991M worldwide and are staring down the $1B mark when today is all said and done. The domestic cume is currently $314.3M and the Anthony- and Joe Russo-helmed superhero mash-up has enlisted $676.7M overseas. The $1B milestone comes on Cap‘s 24th day of release.
Civil War is open in all markets, with China leading the way at $166.3M. The Middle Kingdom is followed by Korea ($60.8M), the UK ($48.3M), Mexico ($40M) and Brazil ($35M).
Last frame, CACW helped propel the Marvel Cinematic Universe across the $10B mark with 13 titles over eight years. The three Captain America films account for nearly $2.1B of the total.
Civil War is now the fourth MCU film to surpass the $1B threshold, joining The Avengers ($1.518B, 2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.405B, 2015), and Iron Man 3 ($1.215B, 2013). Civil War is also Disney’s 10th billion-dollar release out of the 25 films that have reached the milestone in the history of the industry.
Disney now boasts the Nos. 1 and 2 movies of the year globally with Zootopia at $974.9M through Thursday. The Jungle Book, meanwhile, is swinging along at $839.7M and counting, with Korea and Japan still on deck. It’s currently No. 4 for the year worldwide, behind Batman V Superman .
