Captain America Meets His Match in 'The Winter Soldier' Action Scene

Can there really be a soldier more super than Captain America?

In this exclusive new clip from “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is in hot pursuit of a masked mystery man. Of course, being an Avenger, Cap doesn’t let little things like doors and windows slow him down. He jumps from one building across the street to another, using his shield like a battering ram to take down anything in his path. But when he flings the shield at the Winter Soldier, the dark figure catches it with one (metal) hand. After a brief look of recognition, the Soldier whips it back at Rogers, knocking him backwards, and then disappears.

It’s an intense, fast-pace scene that’s sort of like the parkour chase from the beginning of “Casino Royale” on Super Soldier serum. And it sets up the central conflict of the film between Rogers and this new enemy. Of course, fans of the comic know this enemy isn’t “new” at all, and there’s a reason for that flash of familiarity. So if you want to go into the movie completely unspoiled, stop reading now.

Yes, the Winter Solider is a blast from Steve Rogers’s past. He’s really Bucky Barnes (played once again by Sebastian Stan), Steve’s pal from back before World War II. In the first movie, Bucky was seemingly killed when he fell from a train down into a snowy crevasse. But apparently Cap wasn’t the only guy to appear to be dead in the ’40s only to be brought back seven decades later. Barnes was given a bionic arm, enhanced abilities, and a bad attitude to become the Winter Soldier and go to war with S.H.I.E.L.D.

As to the question of how Bucky survived his fall and lived long enough to see present day, you’ll have to see the movie to get answers (but remember that Hydra had been experimenting on Bucky when Cap rescued him in “The First Avenger”).

As the clip above shows, the second Captain America solo film has upped the action quotient from first. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have captured the both the power and speed of the comic-book Cap, which is especially impressive since the sibling team is known mostly for directing comedies. They previously made the features “Welcome to Collinwood” and “You, Me & Dupree,” along with TV shows like “Arrested Development” and “Community.” Marvel Studios has been so happy with their work that the brothers will reportedly be back for the third “Captain America” movie.

"The Winter Soldier" has just started to be screened for critics, and while no full reviews are out yet, the response on Twitter so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Here is a sampling of what they are saying:
