Watch a History of California Getting Pummeled on the Big Screen

In this weekend’s disaster-drama San Andreas, Dwayne Johnson plays a rescue helicopter pilot who must deal with the fallout after a massive earthquake turns Los Angeles and San Francisco into rubble. But it’s not the first time California has suffered a big-screen catastrophe: As the above New York Times video notes, the Golden State has long been a beloved(?) target of filmmakers, who’ve subjected it to such eco-calamities as an avian invasion (1963′s Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds), a lava attack (1997′s Volcano), and even a plague of frogs (1999′s Magnolia). Watch the highlights above — and if you have a California zipcode, start pricing out some volcano insurance.
