Bryan Singer Reacts to Critics of 'X-Men: Apocalypse' Villain

X-Men: Apocalypse’s titular villain has a lot of fans unhappy - with his coloring, his voice, and his stature. X-Men director Bryan Singer has heard those complaints and he, well, kind of complained right back. Let’s take you through what he said during a recent press event.

Regarding Apocalypse’s look, Singer took blame for the initial bad reaction. He said the photograph he sent Entertainment Weekly had an unwanted pink hue to it. Singer said, “They maybe just should have taken the pink out of the picture — I should have taken the pink out of the picture. I’m going to take some blame for that.” Of course, whether you think Oscar Isaac looks all that much better now is up to you. Then there’s the matter of his voice. Singer said that first trailer didn’t give what he’ll sound like in theaters: “So people thought, ‘Oh, wait, is that going to be his voice during the whole movie?’ It’s like, no, but to tell the story of the first teaser, we needed the voice, and I hadn’t recreated the voice yet.”

And finally, the criticism over Apocalypse’s size seemed to really make Singer annoyed. “I got the same s— when I cast a 6-foot-3 actor to play 5-foot-4 Wolverine,” he said. Singer added he could’ve just cast a muscle-bound guy who couldn’t act, but instead decided to get a “guy who can actually act like Oscar, who’s a fantastic actor.”
