Individual productions had their ups and downs, but the overall Broadway box office held steady last week as three plays opened — “Oh, Hello on Broadway,” “Heisenberg” and “The Cherry Orchard” — and this week’s opener, “The Front Page,” continued its meteoric rise.
“Oh, Hello” ($464,656), which opened Oct. 10, benefited from some high-profile critical raves to rise more than 10% in the week after its bow, while both “Heisenberg” ($297,088) and “Cherry Orchard” ($323,836) dipped somewhat as they accommodated critics performances and opening nights. But among plays, the leader of the pack remains “Front Page” ($1,278,807), which hit its highest tally yet in the run-up to its Oct. 20 opening.
“Front Page” is one of three shows ramping up for an imminent opening, with “Falsettos” ($457,577) playing its first week of eight previews ahead of an Oct. 27 opening and “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” ($644,591), starring Liev Schreiber, also playing eight before an Oct. 30 opening.
Otherwise, the upticks and dips at individual titles weren’t terribly remarkable last week, and with the return of Lewis Black’s “Black to the Future” ($171,884 for one performance) after a week off, the Broadway cume rang in at $25.4 million for 29 shows, and attendance tallied 243,037 — both negligible downgrades from the previous week’s numbers. The week’s figures were also about equivalent to those from the same week in 2015, when there were 31 shows playing.
There’ll soon be one more show contributing to the Broadway pot, with “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” hoping downtown buzz and the appeal of headliner Josh Groban will add up to robust Broadway box office for the quirky electropop opera. That production starts previews Oct. 18.
