The British Are Coming to Praise 'Lincoln,' Which Tops BAFTA Nominations

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" led all films with 10 nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced Wednesday morning in London.

Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables" and Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" each received nine, followed by the James Bond movie "Skyfall" with eight, "Argo" with seven and "Anna Karenina" with six.

"Django Unchained" and "Zero Dark Thirty" received five nominations each, while "The Master" and "Amour" received four and "Silver Linings Playbook" and "The Hobbit" received three.

In the Best Film category, the nominees are "Lincoln," "Les Miserables," "Life of Pi," "Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty."

While BAFTA nominations are not always the most reliable Oscar predictor, the success of "Lincoln" did reinforce the feeling that Spielberg's historical drama has become the frontrunner this awards season.

Curiously, though, Spielberg did not receive a nomination for Best Director, and neither did Hooper. Nominees in the category are three directors whose films are up for Best Film -- Ben Affleck ("Argo"), Kathryn Bigelow ("Zero Dark Thirty") and Ang Lee ("Life of Pi") -- along with Michael Haneke ("Amour") and Quentin Tarantino ("Django Unchained").

It also came as a mild surprise that "Lincoln" topped all films in nominations, since "Les Miserables" is the kind of British production that often cleans up at BAFTA. Hooper's last film, "The King's Speech," was the only movie to win both the Best Film and the Outstanding British Film awards in the 20 years those two categories have existed.

"Les Miz" was the one film to be nominated in both categories this year. In the Outstanding British Film category, it is competing with "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Anna Karenina," "Skyfall" and "Seven Psychopaths."

In the acting categories, "Lincoln" and "The Master" led with three nominations each; Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones were nominated for the former film, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams for the latter.

Films receiving a pair of acting nominations were "Silver Linings Playbook" (Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, "Les Miz" (Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway), "Argo" (surprise leading-actor nominee Ben Affleck and Alan Arkin) and "Skyfall" (Javier Bardem and Judi Dench).

Missing from the acting categories were Oscar contenders John Hawkes from "The Sessions," Denzel Washington from "Flight" (which will not be released in the UK until 2013), Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver from "Silver Linings Playbook" and Maggie Smith from "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel."

Last year, three of the five BAFTA nominees for Best Film went on to receive Oscar Best Picture nominations, including the film that won both awards, "The Artist."

Since 2000, the BAFTA winner has taken home the Best Picture Oscar seven times, including the last four years in a row. That streak came after a four-year streak in which the winners never matched.
