Weekend Picks: ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ (and some other films)

While "Think Like a Man" rose to No. 1 at the box office the past two weekends in a row, there is no shadow of a doubt that "Marvel's The Avengers" will easily stamp out all competitors this weekend... and likely next. For one, "Avengers" is the only new release going wide in theaters this weekend. For two, it's already collected $281.1 million overseas. For three, next weekend's competition, which includes Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows," doesn't seem to have the stuff to unsettle this behemoth of a flick.

The real question is, how big will "Avengers" grow to be, and will it top "Hunger Games" records?

And oh yeah, there are a few more films coming out this weekend (see below).

Marvel's The Avengers

Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-if violence and action throughout, and a mild drug reference.

What's the Story?
A dream team of Marvel Comics action heroes comes together to save all of mankind, battling Thor's arch nemesis Loki and his troops. Writer-Director Joss Whedon's foray into blockbuster territory should prove successful as reviews have been resoundingly positive. The all-star cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Hemsworth.

Who Will Dig it?
Diehard Whedon fans who have been following his work since "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," Marvel Comics fans, and, um, everyone else in the world.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Rated PG-13 for sexual content and language.

What's the Story?
British retirees travel to India to live out their retirement in, to their initial disappointment, a dilapidated hotel. Soon that disappointment transforms into delight as they hang out and work through their respective pasts. The film, in limited release, stars Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Tom Wilkinson.

Who Will Dig It?
People, likely of an older age, who have not been swept up in the "Avengers" frenzy but want to see a good new movie this weekend.

So, um, yeah... There are other films coming out in limited release this weekend. Not to worry if they're not in your town -- they will make it to DVD soon enough. Miley Cyrus fans may be curious about coming of age film "LOL," also starring Demi Moore. Other films in limited release this weekend include "A Little Bit of Heaven," starring Kate Hudson, dance flick "First Position," and thriller "Meeting Evil" with Samuel L. Jackson and Luke Wilson.
