'The German Doctor' Trailer Explores an Untold Chapter of Post-WWII History
The German Doctor," the new film by Argentinean writer/director Lucía Puenzo, deals with one such historical mystery: what happened to Nazi war criminal Dr. Josef Mengele after he fled the fallen Germany for South America. For all the history books, documentaries, and films produced about World War II, there are still elements of the aftermath that have been largely unexplored. "
The film, based on Puenzo's own historical novel "Wakolda," is set in the city of Bariloche in the Patagonia region of Argentina. A family takes a foreign doctor into their home, not knowing he is the notorious Mengele (played by Àlex Brendemühl). The doctor insinuates himself more and more into the private lives of each familiy members while Nazi hunters close in on his hiding place.
The film is only the second feature for Puenzo as a director, having previously made 2007's "XXY," which won two awards at the Cannes Film Festival. "The German Doctor" was nominated for the Un Certain Regard Award at this past Cannes Festival, and it won Best Film from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Argentina.
"The German Doctor" opens in limited release on April 25.
