Jennifer Lawrence got to practice her walk onstage today in Santa Monica when she took Best Female Lead at the 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards, leading a “Silver Linings Playbook” party that also included Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay, too. Writer-director David O. Russell became giggly with joy as he accepted his award for Best Director, perhaps because he’s aware that tomorrow night at the Oscars he’ll be playing to a tougher crowd.
This was Russell’s day, though, as he thanked the crowd and honored those families coping with “mood disorders and the stigma of mood disorders. This film is for you.” While JLaw will probably win again tomorrow at the Oscars, it will likely be Ben Affleck and team “Argo” getting the bulk of the honors. Neither “Argo” nor “Lincoln” -- both from major studios -- was up for today’s awards saluting independent productions. Scuttlebutt was that today “Silver Linings Playbook” was the Goliath of the awards, with the biggest budget in the field, whereas tomorrow it returns to David stature.

“The Sessions” was popular in the tent in Santa Monica, earning two acting honors. John Hawkes won for Best Male Lead, although he was snubbed for a nomination by the Oscars. His co-star Helen Hunt won for Supporting Actress, a nomination she received from the Academy but will likely lose to Anne Hathaway.
Best Supporting Male went to Matthew McConaughey for his performance as the balladeer strip-club owner in "Magic Mike," beating out Bruce Willis and Sam Rockwell among others. Interestingly, no one nominated in this category is competing in the Best Supporting Actor category tomorrow night.
The final clear crossover winner will be Michael Haneke’s “Amour,” which won for best Foreign Language Film and is the favorite to repeat tomorrow night at the Academy Awards.
