Peter Jackson Back in Middle Earth to Shoot Final ‘Hobbit’ Scenes

Peter Jackson and Sir Ian Mckellan via Jackson's Facebook page.

Peter Jackson took to his Facebook page today to announce that he and his “Hobbit” cast and crew are back on set in New Zealand to film the final shots of his three-movie adaptation of J.R. Tolkien’s beloved book.

“Back on set for our last ‘Hobbit’ pick ups. Our last ever Tolkien pick ups, in fact,” Jackson wrote. “It's going to be an intense few weeks, but we're looking forward to shooting some powerful scenes with our great cast.”

Speaking of that great cast, Jackson also included a photo of himself posing with star Sir Ian McKellan. Well, half of McKellan that is, as there is just a sliver of him in the shot in his Gandalf get-up, i.e. beard, long hair and trademark hat.

From what we can gather via Jackson’s posts, things seem to be moving along nicely in post-production of both the second and third films, versus his mad dash to finish edits on the first “Hobbit,” which he was still tweaking in the days leading up to its premiere.

Even better is that cast and crew are just filming pickups, which is film production speak for small filler shots needed after principal photography that capture different angles of scenes, close-ups of props or locations, etc.

Also back in April when Jackson last posted an update he revealed that he and his longtime editor Jabez Olssen were almost finished with initial edits on the second film, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” and getting ready to begin editing the third and final film, a process Jackson likened to assembling a 2000 piece jigsaw puzzle.

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” hits theaters December 13, 2013 and picks up where the last film left off. The action revolves around Bilbo Baggins, the Dwarves, and Gandalf after they’ve escaped the Misty Mountains and as they attempt to reclaim their gold from the evil dragon Smaug.
