The People Got It Very Wrong: 5 Jaw-Dropping Snubs From People's Choice Award Nominations

The vox populi of awards shows is at again. The People's Choice Awards, which uses some arcane calculus to let us know that mainstream America still loves Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks, and CBS procedurals is out with its annual list of nominations. And it's the same-old, same-old. Except where it (shockingly) isn't.

Sure enough, there's Bullock and her boffo box office scoring a whopping five nods for her two hit flicks, "The Heat" and "Gravity." And CBS, the home base of the People's Choice Awards, is typically well-represented, with nods in virtually every major TV category. Usual suspects like "Glee" (eight nominations), Katy Perry (five noms), Oprah Winfrey, and Robin Williams (whose first PCA came back in 1979 for "Mork and Mindy") were among the notable contenders.

But what about Hanks, he of the 15 PCA nominations? That's where the People's Choice took a serious left turn. And Mr. Gump wasn't alone. Here are the mind-boggling misses from today's nominations.

1. Not Our Bosom Buddy? Two-time Oscar winner Hanks, a favorite to land yet another Best Actor nomination this year for "Captain Phillips," was noticeably MIA from the People's Choice list, even though his Somali pirate potboiler is up for Favorite Dramatic Movie. Small consolation. But we're certain Hanks will get over it.

2. Not So Super. Even $700 million in global ticket sales wasn't good enough to get "Man of Steel" much love. The Superman reboot was shut out in all the top movie categories — while Amy Adams was able to snag a Best Dramatic Actress nom for her portrayal of Lois Lane.

3. Broken Badly. Reigning Emmy champ "Breaking Bad" failed to break into the field for Favorite Cable TV Drama, losing out to the likes of "Downton Abbey" (since when did PBS become a cable channel?), "Pretty Little Liars," "Sons of Anarchy," "The Walking Dead," and "White Collar." It did however make the list of Favorite Series We Miss the Most. Meanwhile, its Emmy-certified stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were nowhere to be found among the acting noms, but Cranston's dearly departed Walter White did manage to crack the Favorite TV Anti-Hero category.

4. Evidence Fox News Channel Stuffed the Ballot Box. News flash: television's foremost proponent of fake news, Jon Stewart, didn't register a nomination for Favorite Late-Night Host. With Mr. "Daily Show" out of the running, the race comes down to Stewart's Comedy Central foil Stephen Colbert, Conan O'Brien, David Letterman, and Jimmys Fallon and Kimmel.

5. Evidence Harry Styles Stuffed the Ballot Box. The wildly popular Taylor Swift apparently isn't going to win this popularity contest, failing to score a nod for Favorite Female Artist, apparently ranking below such songbirds as Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry, Pink, and Selena Gomez. She did manage to get a nomination for Favorite Country Artist, though.

Hey, at least "Sharknado" scored a nomination. Let's hear it for the People!

Here's the complete rundown of nominations for the 2013 People's Choice Awards. The show will air Jan. 8 and be hosted, in the usual display of CBS synergy, by the stars of "2 Broke Girls," Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs.
