'Particle Fever' Trailer: Go Inside the World's Largest Machine

Yahoo Movies

The world's largest machine deserves one big movie.

"Particle Fever" is the first feature documentary to follow the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, the particle accelerator 17-miles in circumference that lies about 100 yards below the ground outside of Geneva, Switzerland. The film highlights six of the 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries as they attempted to discover the Higgs boson — nicknamed "the God particle" — and, consequently, answer questions about the origins of our universe.

Director Mark Levinson makes his documentary directorial debut with the film he's been developing since 2006. His crew filmed for four years at the LHC, and then he spent another year working with Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch ("Apocalypse Now") to cut it down to feature length. Levinson was particularly suited to tell the story, though, because before he embarked on a career in filmmaking he earned a doctorate in particle physics from the University of California at Berkeley.

"Particle Fever" opens in New York on March 5, and expands to more cities in the following weeks.
