The hit concert film of the season is getting something of an encore performance as "One Direction: This Is Us" is set to be re-released as an extended "fan cut" this week.
In response to the box office success of the film, Sony Pictures will be unveiling the extended cut on Friday, which will feature 20 additional minutes and four extra songs. The audience has a say in the show, too, as fans can help decide which four songs will make the new cut, according to a press release from the studio.
"We're overwhelmed by the response to the film, so we're thrilled to be able to release this extended cut of the film for One Direction fans," said Jeff Blake, Sony's Chairman of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution. "Followers can reach out on Twitter @1DThisIsUs with the songs they'd like to hear in the film — and go to the theater on Friday to see and hear which songs make the cut."
"One Direction: This Is Us" offers audiences an all-access pass as it tells the remarkable story of English-Irish pop boy band's rise to fame, from their hometown beginnings and competing on the X-Factor in 2010 to performing at London's famed O2 Arena. The 3D film hit U.S. on August 30 and earned $15 million over its opening weekend; it has since scored a worldwide gross just shy of $50 million.
"One Direction: This Is Us" isn't the only "boy band" concert film to receive a theatrical extended cut. "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" was released in the U.S. on February 11, 2011 and earned a whopping $30 million over its opening weekend; a "Director's Fan Cut," which removed 30 minutes of existing footage and replaced it with 40 minutes of new material, was released two weeks later. The film went on to earn a total of over $73 million at the domestic box office.
