Mel Gibson Revealed as Expendables Co-Founder as ‘The Expendables 3′ Begins Production
We knew Mel Gibson was playing the bad guy in "The Expendables 3," and now we know just how personal a villain he'll be playing as principal photography for the third installment of the action franchise begins today.
The press release issued by Lionsgate and Millennium Films offers an official description of the film's plot, along with some details on Mel Gibson's character. It seems that two men who were once friends are now enemies as a ghost from Barney Ross' (Sylvester Stallone) past comes a'callin' ... and packing some major heat.
Poor guy probably never had a chance at being a good guy — with a name like 'Conrad Stonebanks,' your destiny probably involves evil-doing by default ...
In "The Expendables 3," Barney (Stallone), Christmas (Jason Statham) and the rest of the team comes face-to-face with Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who years ago co-founded The Expendables with Barney. Stonebanks subsequently became a ruthless arms trader and someone who Barney was forced to kill… or so he thought. Stonebanks, who eluded death once before, now is making it his mission to end The Expendables — but Barney has other plans. Barney decides that he has to fight old blood with new blood, and brings in a new era of Expendables team members, recruiting individuals who are younger, faster and more tech-savvy. The latest mission becomes a clash of classic old-school style versus high-tech expertise in the Expendables' most personal battle yet.
So yeah, expect a lot of young guys making "old guy" jokes, probably about things like vinyl records and music recorded before 1990. You can also expect the old guys to make plenty of "young whippersnapper" remarks, with probably at least one veteran team member saying something like "tweet this" before blowing something up.
Some of that "new blood" will include "Twilight" alum Kellan Lutz, MMA star Ronda Rousey, welterweight boxing champion Victor Ortiz and "The Dark Knight Rises" star Glenn Powell, who also starred with Stallone and new "Expendables" recruit Antonio Banderas ten years ago in "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over." (And yeah, it looks like Lutz is replacing Liam Hemsworth this time around as the token young guy.)

The press release also confirms the film's official returning players, which include Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose involvement was seemingly up in the air until now. Along with Gibson and Banderas, new cast members listed include Wesley Snipes and Harrison Ford, whom we're assuming will be stepping in for Bruce Willis as the team's handler.
The press release makes no mention of Mickey Rourke, whose apparent involvement was tweeted by Stallone in May, or Eric Roberts, who's currently listed on the film's IMDb page as a character named 'James Munroe.' Oh, and it would appear that Clint Eastwood is indeed not appearing in the movie.
"The Expendables 3" will hit theaters on August 15, 2014.
