The highly anticipated trailer for "Dawn of The Planet of the Apes" has stepping into the light, and it does not disappoint.
Clocking in at just over one minute, the sneak peek sets a serious, even eerie, tone as humankind prepares to go to war against the risen apes, a battle that (as far as we can tell) will determine the fate of the world. No pressure.
We sense the state of things from a group of people taking shelter in a ramshackle warehouse and a flash of Keri Russell gasping as she wakes -- seemingly from a nightmare -- in her bed. In other words, all is not well with the current … umm… leadership that emerged from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," 2011's sleeper hit that surprised everyone with not only its quality, but its massive $176 million box office haul.
And it seems the fight is going to come sooner rather than later. Jason Clarke (who plays Malcolm) heads out into the woods to call up to the sky, "I need to speak to Caesar."
Not surprisingly, that is precisely at this moment that the real star comes into view: Caesar himself (motion captured once again by the great Andy Serkis). It's worth noting what an impression he makes without saying so much as a word. The camera zeros in on his war-painted face and furrowed brow; it's pretty much impossible to avoid an impending sense of dread. What's more, we're just watching this on a computer screen -- once this movie hits theaters,it will be terrifying ... and awesome.
If the film holds half as much tension as its trailer, Caesar is going to be (even more) famous.
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" hits theaters July 11, 2014.
