Happy 40th Birthday, Christian Bale!

It's hard to believe he is the big 4-0 and yet, because he's been working in Hollywood for so long, it's not that surprising. So how will the Oscar-winner celebrate, if he celebrates? Is Bale the type to enjoy a birthday party? There has always been a seriousness that surrounds the actor, in large part due to his Daniel Day Lewis-like focus, dedication to the craft, and contribution to the artform.

Personally and professionally there have been a few bumps along the way, like that infamous meltdown on the "Terminator Salvation" set or being in the 2002 fighting-dragons-thriller "Reign of Fire," but in recent years, the Welsh-born performer has appeared far more at ease both onscreen and off, like he's made peace with being a part of the Hollywood machine and tries not to let little things affect him. Of course, the characters he's chosen to play are a big part of that as well.

Therefore to highlight this festive occasion, we're celebrating the softer-to-serious-to-not-so-serious, happy sides of Christian Bale, an evolution you can see with the help of these smile-inducing GIFs:

Happy to be 13 and doing promotional rounds for Steven Spielberg's "Empire of the Sun:"

Happy to be singing and dancing with a wicked East Coast accent in "Newsies:"

Who can forget his happy in "American Psycho?"

And those happy dance moves?

Possibly the beginning of an in-between happy stage:

Not nearly happy enough to be sitting with Kermit the Frog (yeah, that's doctored):

Something tells us "Reign of Fire" didn't make him happy:

Trying to be happy after "Terminator Salvation" came out?

The happiest Bruce Wayne/Batman moment of all:

Back to a happy place during awards season for "The Fighter:"

Enjoying a genuine giggle during the promotional rounds for last year's dark drama "Out of the Furnace:"

Clearly now with another Oscar nomination for "American Hustle," he's back in a groove:

It's nice to see you having fun, Christian Bale. Happy birthday to you!
