Gwen, meet Mary Jane. Mary Jane, this is Gwen.

Shooting is under way for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," and fans got a glimpse of one of the story's more intriguing moments today as photos surfaced of a scene in which two of the women in Peter Parker's life meet, seemingly for the first time. On one side, longtime girl-next-door crush Mary Jane Watson; on the other, cute nerd-girl sweetheart Gwen Stacy.

In the on-set photos, Emma Stone, who played Gwen in 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man," is back in character and dressed in a subtly sexy outfit featuring a purple skirt, patterned blouse, dark stockings and tall black boots.

While Gwen looks like she's dressed up for a hot date, Shailene Woodley's Mary Jane seems more like the cool girl who would go to Ozzfest with you. Woodley, best known as Amy on the TV series "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" and for playing Alexandra in "The Descendants," is decked out in snug black jeans, a retro-styled rock T-shirt, and a denim jacket with leather sleeves.

Longtime followers of the "Spider-Man" comic book saga will recall that Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) broke things off with Mary Jane to follow his heart and begin dating Gwen, but eventually fate took a tragic turn which brought Peter and M.J. back together.

Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy, with Tobey Maguire in the lead, focused mostly on the Peter/Mary Jane relationship (with Kirsten Dunst playing M.J.), though Gwen did pop up in "Spider-Man 3," portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard. The new stills suggest director Marc Webb (also returning for the 2012 reboot) is pushing the Gwen storyline harder than Raimi did, and that he's giving Mary Jane a darker and edgier vibe than Dunst's sweeter and sunnier version.

Aside from Garfield, Stone and Woodley, the sequel will also feature Jamie Foxx as Electro, Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, and Paul Giamatti as the Rhino. Columbia Pictures plans to have the film in theaters in May 2014.
