News flash for Spider-Man fans: the venerable villain Electro is on his way, and if you want to find him, point yourself in the direction of San Diego at this year's Comic-Con fan fete.
Sony Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have launched their publicity blitz for 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" at this year's Con, and with that comes our first chance to see and hear Jamie Foxx as Electro.
Watch 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Electro Teaser:
The 39 second clip begins with ominous tracking shots through a high-tech lab as a deep and distorted, robotic voice declares, "I can feel it in the walls … I can feel it in my veins … no matter what you do, Doc, you can't tame it …" The clip then cuts to Foxx, head shaved and skin looking a strange pink-and-blue as he's hooked up to various gizmos giving off plenty of sparks. He stares into the camera with blank, sinister eyes, until finally a title card fills the screen: "Electro Arrives, July 19, Hall H, 4:00 p.m."
We're most definitely going to learn even more about Foxx's take on the legendary comic-book bad guy on Friday afternoon, and Yahoo! Movies will be there to report the action.
Up until now, Foxx has focused his film career on comedy and action — playing the good guy. But Electro is his first full-on villain role. And judging from the menace in his voice and the grimace on his face, he's ready to go bad all the way.
Even More Spidey Baddies...
Felicity Jones, whose "Spider-Man 2" role is supposedly top secret, can forget that second career with the CIA. She keeps blabbing Spidey news. Jones just revealed the Green Goblin (presumably Chris Cooper's Norman Osbourne) will appear in the sequel and — get this — that she is his girlfriend. Yup, this one's going to be jam packed with villains.
In an interview with the British entertainment site View London, Jones, who is promoting the new indie drama "Breathe In," mentioned the Spidey spoiler in passing: "It"s all quite shrouded in secrecy, but I’m the Goblin’s girlfriend — I'm in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I'm on the dark side."
The statement sounds harmless enough, except that neither Marvel nor Sony has yet revealed that the Green Goblin would be part of the picture's lineup of villains. So thanks for the spoiler, Felicity! There's one more piece of the puzzle that's not shrouded in secrecy anymore.
This isn't the first time Jones has said more than she should have about "Amazing Spider-Man 2." Last January, it was announced that Jones would be joining the cast of Spidey sequel, but the producers weren't revealing whom she would play. Speculation on the blogosphere had it that Jones had been cast as Felicia Hardy, aka villainess Black Cat, and in June, while doing press for "Breathe In," Jones was asked if she was looking forward to playing Black Cat. Jones promptly stumbled into the reporter's trap, saying "Um, well … ah … possibly, I don't know, yeah. Kind of … it's … yeah, if that happens, that would be wonderful."
So in case you lost count, so far we have four villains on deck for "Amazing Spider Man 2" – Electro, Green Goblin, a possible Black Cat, and the Rhino (Paul Giamatti).
It looks like Andrew Garfield's Spidey is going to have his hands (and his webs) full when the movie swings into theaters May 2, 2104.
