Plenty of actors have a little work done to appear younger and fresher, especially when they’ve spent 25 years in the business. So why should Chucky be any different?

Chucky, the evil doll who first terrified horror fans in the 1988 scare-fest “Child’s Play,” is returning in a direct-to-DVD vehicle called “Curse of Chucky,” and the first image released from the film makes it look as if Chucky has had some work done.

Chucky’s run-ins with various people trying to stop his various killing sprees had left him with plenty of dramatic facial scarring in 1998’s “Bride of Chucky” and 2004’s “Seed of Chucky.” But the picture of Chucky on the cover of the “Curse of Chucky” soundtrack shows a doll that’s good as new, practically mint-in-package. So has Chucky been to a literal plastic surgeon? Or has another “Good Guy Chucky” doll been possessed by the spirit of a crazed murderer?

One new twist for “Curse of Chucky,” along with the doll’s more handsome appearance, is that this movie is a family affair. Veteran actor Brad Dourif is returning as the voice of Chucky, while the female lead, Nica, is being played by Brad’s daughter Fiona Dourif. In “Curse of Chucky,” Nica is a woman in her early thirties who is distraught after her mother commits suicide. Nica and her sister Barb (Danielle Bisutti) soon find themselves at odds over matters of family business, and as Nica and Barb continue to butt heads, Barbs’s young daughter receives an unexpected present in the mail – an unusual doll. Cue scary music.

“Curse of Chucky” will be arriving on DVD and Blu-Ray in the Fall, and was written and directed by Don Mancini, who has been a writer on all six “Chucky” films to date, as well as directing “Bride of Chucky” and “Seed of Chucky.”
