April Fool’s! Variety Falls For Bryan Singer’s Lady Gaga ‘X-Men’ Casting Tweet

Bryan Singer wins the title of High Court Jester of this year's April Fool's Day, as the "X-Men" director managed to get Variety to run his trickster tweet regarding a certain pop singer being cast in "X-Men: Days of Future Past."

Singer, who has been announcing the major casting news of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" via his Twitter account over the past several weeks, announced earlier today that none other than Lady Gaga would be playing the part of the mutant Dazzler:

Singer's rather "Poker Face" (hey, why not?) approach to the announcement had more than one outlet wondering if this were just another April Fool's Joke (the Internet is the one place where the ridiculous holiday is still widely celebrated) or if there was actually some truth to it. After all, Lady Gaga has recently embarked on something of an acting career with an upcoming turn in Robert Rodriguez's "Machete Kills," and ... well, she's actually not a bad choice for the role of Alison Blaire, who can convert sound vibrations into light and energy beams. The fact that the character was originally conceived in 1980 as a cross-promotional, multi-media creation between Casablanca Records and Marvel Comics also made the announcement seem not as far-fetched as it was at first glance.

However, Variety immediately took Singer's tweet as the real deal, posting it as legit casting news with the headline "Lady Gaga to Play Dazzler in 'X-Men: Days of Future Past'" and referring to Lady Gaga as an addition to a "diverse and intriguing cast." However, Variety has since tweeted that they've fallen for what they claim is indeed an April Fool's joke from Singer:

Variety doesn't quote a source as to who or what actually confirmed that Singer's casting announcement is false, though there is word coming from Lady Gaga's agency that she is not involved in the film.

We kind of hate to say this, but ... Lady Gaga as Dazzler actually wouldn't have been half-bad casting. Ah well.
