Shantay, you stay! Alexander Skarsgard tried out a new look Monday night at the San Francisco premiere of his new film, The Diary of a Teenage Girl. The 38-year-old actor hasn't been on television since True Blood ended last year but perhaps he ought to give the next season of RuPaul's Drag Race a go. That or he's auditioning to be the next Hedwig.

In the movie, Skarsgard plays the boyfriend of the titular teenage girl, played by Bel Powley. The two begin an affair which sets the teen on a path of self-exploration. On the red carpet, Skarsgard was serving up fish in a gold gown and a blond wig straight out the Xanadu collection. He accessorized with a silver clutch — mixing metals: a pretty brave move for a drag novice.

It's not, however, Skarsgard's first time in heels. He played the transvestite Geert in the 2006 film Kill Your Darlings.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl is based on a graphic novel of the same name. Directed by first timer Marielle Heller, it made its debut at Sundance this year and will be released this week in theaters.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl also stars Kristen Wiig, who plays Skarsgard's character's girlfriend, Christopher Meloni, and Joshua Grannell, the alter-ego of one of San Francisco's most famous drag queens, Peaches Christ. It has received rave reviews and won the Grand Prix of Generation 14plus sidebar for best feature length film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The section is for films with themes targeting teenagers.

Skarsgard didn't specifically state why he chose to attend the premiere in drag, but why question it? As they say, never look a gift whorse in the mouth.
