12 Reasons Why Traffic’s Backed Up on the Golden Gate Bridge

Movie Talk

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of those distinct American monuments – and, like many other iconic landmarks (e.g. the Statue of Liberty, the White House), it's gotten quite a bit of screen time, in everything from "Vertigo" to "Dirty Harry" to "Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco."

But there are a handful of films that place the Golden Gate Bridge front and center on the silver screen, to sometimes destructive, always chaotic effect. Should you find yourself stuck in traffic waiting to cross it, perhaps it's backed up for one of the following reasons:

1. It's under attack by a giant alien monster – "Pacific Rim"

2. It's the scene of a huge ape uprising – "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"

3. It's being torn apart by a band of mutants – "X-3: The Last Stand"

4. It's the site of a spaceship-sighting* – "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home"

*This would be less weird when San Francisco becomes the center for Starfleet Command ("Star Trek" 2009).

5. It's fallen on by a huge alien/robot – "Monsters vs. Aliens"

6. It's being chomped on by a mega shark – "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus"

7. It's being torn apart by a tentacled underwater behemoth – "It Came from Beneath the Sea"

8. It's being destroyed by sunlight – "The Core"

9. It's being used by crazy vampire drivers – "Interview with the Vampire"

10. It's the setting for a high-altitude 007 battle – "A View to a Kill"

11. It's being threatened by a giant tsunami – "The Abyss"

12. It's the center of a battle between fighter jets and a very angry, very green giant – "Hulk"
