'Hobbit' Law: Elf Always Beats Human … and Orc
Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel, Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss (Warner Bros./Lionsgate)
There are scads of bows and arrows in movies these days, and (apologies to Jennifer Lawrence) "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" gets more archery onscreen than all of 'em.
It's only appropriate that Yahoo Movies grill the weapon wielders themselves — "Hobbit" newcomers Evangeline Lilly and Luke Evans — on whether they could out-bull's-eye "Hunger Games" archer Katniss Everdeen, played by Lawrence.
Watch 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' Cast Talk Orcs, Archery, and Potty Mouths:
Lilly plays the butt-kicking Woodland elf Tauriel, who expertly dispatches an onslaught of nasty orcs alongside fellow green arrow Legolas (Orlando Bloom). "She's an elf. Elf against human: Elf always wins," the 34-year-old "Lost" alum asserted. "Those are the laws of Middle-earth. Sorry."
Evans agreed: Tauriel, who by sheer numbers makes way more kills in "Smaug" with her bow and arrow than does Katniss in "Catching Fire," is the clear winner. And, yeah, we'll acknowledge the vote is clearly skewed on this one.
As for his own Bard the Bowman, Evans, also 34, had to ponder a bit. After all, Katniss does hit her mark 99.9 percent of the time, and it's a missed target (though not his) that keeps Bard up at night.
Evans eventually landed on Bard as the victor, but he did acknowledge, "It would be a tight one." (Slight spoiler: Bard shoots a few darts in "Smaug," but his big bow-and-arrow moment awaits us in the follow-up "Hobbit" sequel.)
Katniss, you have a lot of making up to do in "Mockingjay." Just sayin'!
"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" rolls into theaters on Friday.
