Auds are splurging on “The Purge” as estimates for the scarer’s weekend haul keep getting pushed higher and higher. The latest tally has “Purge” at $16.7 million from Friday, and headed to about $38 million for the weekend.

This is a big step up from pre-weekend predictions that had “Purge” in the low-$20 millions. Pic, from Universal, is the first Jason Blum-produced low-budget horror for the studio.

Since the successes of “Insidious” and the “Paranormal Activity” franchise, Blum has become Hollywood’s go-to guy for modestly-funded, massively-attended scare fare. “Purge” earned enough in late Thursday night coin ($3.4 million) to recoup its budget before P&A spend.

Fox’s “The Internship” took second Friday with $6.6 million, barely enough to beat back holdovers “Fast and Furious 6″ and “Now You See Me” each with about $6 million, but not by enough to confidently hold that lead.

The laffer will likely land around $18 million for fourth place this frame, putting it a long way from its $58 million budget.

With 46% and 36% week-over-week drops respectively, U’s “Fast and Furious 6″ and Summit’s “Now You See Me” continue to perform. The latest “Fast and Furious” is looking at about $19 million for its third frame in theaters, which will push it past the $200 million mark domestically, with “Now You See Me” right on its heels a hair below $19 million in its soph sesh.
