Fresh off the strong opening weekend of The Boss Baby, screenwriter Michael McCullers is set to adapt the children's book Frogkisser! for Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
The tone of the fairy tale musical - which will be a CG-animated hybrid title starring a live-action lead - is akin to the Shrek films and The Princess Bride: "Lighthearted but tongue-in-cheek."
Written by fantasy/YA author Garth Nix, Frogkisser! centers on Princess Anya, who has an uncanny ability to break curses with magic-assisted kisses. When her evil stepfather (aka her evil stepmother's new husband) plans a kingdom-wide takeover, she befriends a talking dog, a boy thief trapped in the body of a newt and some mischievous wizards, and sets off on a quest to free her land. Nix wrote the book, which Scholastic Press released in February, for his young daughter.
Released by Fox, DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby opened above expectations to an estimated $49 million, unseating Disney's Beauty and the Beast to take the top spot at the domestic box office. The PG-rated, CG-animated movie stars Alec Baldwin as a business-minded newborn, and also features Steve Buscemi, Jimmy Kimmel, Lisa Kudrow and Tobey Maguire in the voice cast.
McCullers previously wrote the screenplays for two of the Austin Powers films, and also wrote and directed the Amy Poehler-Tina Fey comedy Baby Mama. His upcoming projects include scripts for Sony's animated Hotel Transylvania 3 and Universal's animated Shrek 5. He is repped by WME and 3 Arts.
